Wind and surge get the headlines, but in recent years the rain has become the deadliest part of a hurricane — and it kills people who thought they were safe because they live far from the coast.
The hazard that's now number one
Over the half-century from 1963 to 2012, rainfall-induced freshwater flooding caused about 27% of direct U.S. hurricane deaths — already the single most common cause. In the most recent decade that share has jumped to roughly 57%: today, more people die in tropical systems from freshwater flooding than from any other hazard. And most of it happens inland — historically, well over half of U.S. tropical-cyclone deaths occur away from the coast.
Why a storm can flood you a hundred miles inland
A tropical system is a vast engine carrying enormous amounts of moisture. As it moves ashore and weakens, it doesn't stop raining — it can drop a foot or more of rain over a region, especially if it's moving slowly or stalls. Hilly terrain wrings even more rain out of the air. A “downgraded” tropical depression, or even its remnants, can produce catastrophic flooding hundreds of miles from where it made landfall, long after the wind threat is gone.
It doesn't take deep water
Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you off your feet; 12 inches can float many cars; two feet will carry away most vehicles, including trucks and SUVs. Water also hides washed-out roads and downed, energized power lines. The rule is simple: Turn Around, Don't Drown — never drive or walk into flood water.
What to do
- Know if you're in a flood-prone area — near a river, creek, or low spot — well before a storm. Flooding can arrive days after the rain, as rivers crest.
- Don't fixate on the category or the cone. Inland flooding depends on rain and terrain, not wind speed; you can be far outside the cone and still flood.
- Move to higher ground when flooding threatens, and never attempt a flooded road — you can't tell how deep it is or whether the roadbed is gone.
Bottom line
The rain outlasts and out-ranges the wind. Freshwater flooding is now the leading killer in U.S. tropical systems, it strikes far inland, and it takes shockingly little water to be deadly. Watch the rainfall and flood forecasts as closely as the track — and turn around, don't drown.
