You've seen them: a hurricane map covered in a tangle of colored lines, each going a slightly different way. These “spaghetti models” can inform — or badly mislead — depending on how you read them.

What the lines actually are

Each line is the track predicted by a different track-forecast tool — some are full physics ("dynamical") models, some are members of one model's ensemble, and some are simpler statistical or trajectory aids that are known to be weaker. They are not all the same kind of forecast. Forecasters run many models because each handles the atmosphere a little differently; comparing them shows the range of possibilities. When the lines cluster tightly, confidence is higher. When they fan out widely, the future is genuinely uncertain — and that, by itself, is useful to know.

The mistake everyone makes

It's tempting to find the line going over your town and either panic or relax. Don't. No single line is “the forecast,” and the models aren't equal — some are far more reliable than others, and a few on any given plot are known to perform poorly. Picking out one line tells you almost nothing.

Why the official forecast beats any one model

NHC's forecasters look at all the models, weight them by how each has performed, add their own expertise, and produce the official forecast — the center line inside the cone. Over time, that official forecast consistently beats any individual model. So glance at the spaghetti plot for the spread (how uncertain things are), but for your decisions trust the official forecast and the watches and warnings, not a favorite noodle.

Bottom line

Spaghetti models show the range of possible tracks, and tight-versus-spread tells you how confident to be. But never act on a single line — the official NHC forecast, which blends and outperforms them all, is the one to follow.
